What is a piano chord tutorial
It’s free lesson Friday! Here is your custom made piano lesson tutorial that is free! Free online lessons is just one of the ways in which Feely Piano School is reaching a larger community through piano lessons.
In this lesson we will cover topics of “what is a piano chord”, “how to structure your hand” and “what are common piano chord progressions”.
What is a piano chord?
A piano chord is a group of more than one note, played at once. The purpose of a chord is to have more than one sound blend together to create a harmony. Most usually chords starts with one alphabet letter, let’s choose C.
C is your bottom, or root note of the chord. This note will determine the other notes of the chord. In order to understand what note comes next, you take your bottom note of the chord and move up two alphabet letters.
C-D-E – Therefore C is note 1, D is note 2 and E is note 3. Your next note to add to the chord will be E.
Now your chord is C, E, and what would be your third note of the chord? Watch the tutorial to find out!
Using the above worksheet to play piano chords
If you are wanting to practice playing piano chords take a look at the free piano chord worksheet above. In the worksheet you will see that the activity asks the student to play finger 1-3-5 and 5-3-1. When you play these fingers, you are mostly outlining the fingering involved in a piano chord!
Why?
If you can imagine C getting LH finger 5, E would naturally get finger 3, and G would naturally get finger 1! Understanding your finger numbers on the piano can be hard, watch our tutorial on piano fingering, here!
