In 2014, I graduated from the Faculty of Music at the University of Toronto. I wanted to break the boundaries of the current music industry- many of my friends and I were told that “musicians were starving” and that we would not make a reasonable living as a teacher.
At the time, I was living in both Toronto and Waterloo, where my previous partner was. I was wanting to see my partner, so I needed to find a way to make money to pay for my gas. I thought “I should teach piano in Waterloo”, but was having no piano of my own in Waterloo, and was not enthusiastic about working at another music school. Previous experiences at music school locations showed me that teachers were mistreated – often having students cancel lesson, paper thin walls with multiple other instruments, and the education quality was often extremely poor due to my lack of inspiration in the ghostly rooms.
I started to teach in the homes to students, as I saw that people enjoyed the convenience, affordability, and students liked when their parents saw them play.
5 years later, it’s 2019 and I couldn’t be more proud to be a part of the team, one of the many small players in our accross Canada attempt, to provide at home music teachers throughout the county in a new, and easier way, with technology.
